HOW DOG TRAINING WORKS AT CANDID DOG TRAINING
A Structured, Practical Approach to Training Dogs and Supporting Owners
Dog training works best when there is a clear plan, realistic expectations, and consistency from everyone involved.
At Candid Dog Training, training is delivered through a structured, assessment-led pathway, not isolated sessions, so dogs and owners have the time and support needed to build real, lasting skills.
This page explains how the process works, so you know what to expect before booking.
WHY TRAINING STARTS WITH AN ASSESSMENT
Every dog is different. Behaviour, motivation, learning history, environment, and owner handling all influence how training should be approached.
Training begins with an in-depth assessment to ensure the work ahead is appropriate and effective.
During the assessment, we:
build a clear picture of your dog’s behaviour and emotional state
observe motivation, engagement, and learning style
assess handling, leash use, and communication
identify management needs and safety considerations
The assessment sets the direction for training and ensures decisions are made thoughtfully, not reactively.
TRAINING FOUNDATIONS: THE STARTING POINT
All training at Candid Dog Training begins with Training Foundations.
Training Foundations is a structured program designed to establish the systems required for learning, regardless of whether the goal is obedience, puppy development, or behavioural support.
This stage focuses on:
motivation and reinforcement access
clear communication and feedback
management and arousal regulation
handling and leash mechanics
Training Foundations is not about fixing specific behaviours. It is about making behaviour modifiable and training predictable.
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER FOUNDATIONS
Once Training Foundations is complete, progress is reviewed and the most appropriate next step is chosen based on the dog’s readiness and the owner’s goals.
Possible next stages may include:
continued skill development and obedience training
additional one-on-one support where needed
behaviour-specific work for dogs requiring further guidance
Progression is based on suitability and readiness, not assumptions or pressure.
PUPPIES, REACTIVE DOGS, AND COMPLEX CASES
Puppies, adolescent dogs, and dogs with behavioural concerns all follow the same initial process.
Young dogs benefit from early structure, clear communication, and appropriate management before specific skills are layered on.
Dogs displaying fear, reactivity, aggression, or high arousal require careful, structured handling. For these dogs, foundations must be in place before any specialised behavioural work begins. This ensures dogs are not pushed into situations they are not ready for and owners are equipped to support progress safely
A STRUCTURED APPROACH BY DESIGN
Training is delivered through structured programs rather than one-off sessions.
This approach supports:
consistency and repetition
clearer expectations
better learning outcomes
reduced frustration for dogs and owners
The goal is sustainable progress, not short-term fixes.
HOW TO GET STARTED
Training begins by booking an initial assessment.
From there:
Attend the assessment
Complete Training Foundations
Progress into the most appropriate next stage
This process ensures training decisions are made early, clearly, and in the best interest of both dog and owner.
