TRAINING FOUNDATIONS

The Starting Point for All Training at Candid Dog Training

Training Foundations is where all work begins.

Delivered one-on-one, this phase builds the core systems that allow dogs and owners to learn together clearly and consistently. It’s not about rushing behaviour change. It’s about creating the capability that makes meaningful change possible.

Regardless of age, breed, or behavioural history, every dog benefits from strong foundations.

WHY TRAINING FOUNDATIONS EXISTS

Dogs rarely struggle because they are stubborn or unwilling. They struggle when communication is unclear, expectations are inconsistent, or systems are missing.

Training Foundations exists to establish those systems before moving into more specific work. This stage ensures:

  • Dogs understand how to engage in training

  • Owners understand how to communicate clearly

  • Learning becomes predictable rather than frustrating

Without this groundwork, obedience becomes unreliable and behaviour work stalls.

WHAT TRAINING FOUNDATIONS BUILDS

Training Foundations focuses on making behaviour modifiable.

Key areas include:

Motivation & Reinforcement Access

Teaching you and your dog how to engage in training and clearly understand how rewards are earned.

Clear Communication & Marker Systems

Helping you deliver clear feedback at the right moment, so your dog understands what is expected.

Management & Arousal Regulation

Putting practical structure in place so unwanted behaviours aren’t repeatedly practised, and helping your dog learn how to settle and regulate.

Handling & Leash Mechanics

Teaching you how to guide your dog clearly on lead, without adding confusion, tension, or conflict.

These skills form the baseline for all further training.

WHAT WE LOOK FOR BEFORE PROGRESSING

Training Foundations isn’t about simply completing six sessions. It’s about building genuine understanding and reliability before moving on.

Before progressing into advanced obedience or behaviour-focused work, we look for:

  • Your dog understands how rewards are earned, can stay engaged without confusion, and can handle simple non-reward feedback without escalating.

  • Your dog can move between activity and calm, pause between repetitions without building frustration, and settle on a place/bed under low to mild distraction.

  • Your dog responds to light leash guidance without resistance and can commit to recall with minimal support when needed.

  • Your dog can perform core skills in low-distraction environments and maintain composure around manageable environmental stimuli.

If these skills are already present, we refine and strengthen them. If there are gaps, we build them properly.

Progression is based on demonstrated readiness, not guesswork.

HOW IT’S DELIVERED

Training Foundations begins after your initial assessment.

From there, we work through a structured six-session phase delivered one-on-one.

Sessions build on each other. The goal is not speed, it’s steady development. When the foundations are solid, progress becomes reliable.

Some teams move quickly because the system is already in place. Others require more installation and refinement. The framework remains consistent, the depth adjusts to the dog and handler.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER FOUNDATIONS

Once this phase is complete, we review progress and decide what makes the most sense next.

For some dogs, the original concerns begin to settle during Foundations. For others, the stability built here allows for more focused behaviour work or further skill development.

There is no automatic track. The next step is chosen based on demonstrated readiness.

HOW TO GET STARTED

Training begins with an initial assessment.

From there:

  • Attend the assessment

  • Complete Training Foundations

  • Move into the next stage when appropriate
