TRAINING FOUNDATIONS

TRAINING FOUNDATIONS

Training Foundations is the starting point for all training at Candid Dog Training.

It is a structured, assessment-led program designed to build the core systems that make learning possible for both dogs and owners, regardless of age, breed, or behavioural history.

Rather than offering isolated sessions, training is delivered through a clear pathway so progress is realistic, ethical, and sustainable.

WHY TRAINING FOUNDATIONS EXISTS

Dogs don’t struggle because they are stubborn, dominant, or unwilling. They struggle because the systems required for learning are missing or inconsistent.

Training Foundations exists to establish those systems before asking dogs to perform specific behaviours or work through complex challenges.

This stage ensures:

  • dogs understand how to engage in training

  • owners understand how to communicate clearly

  • learning becomes predictable rather than frustrating

Without this groundwork, obedience breaks down and behavioural work stalls

HOW TRAINING FOUNDATIONS WORKS

Training Foundations begins with an initial assessment, which ensures training starts appropriately rather than generically.

From there, training continues across a structured six-week program, delivered one-on-one.

The focus is not on rushing behaviour change.
The focus is on building the capability required for change to occur.

WHAT TRAINING FOUNDATIONS FOCUSES ON

Training Foundations is about making behaviour modifiable.

Key areas include:

Motivation & Reinforcement Access
Teaching dogs how to engage in training and earn outcomes meaningfully.

Clear Communication & Marker Systems
Helping dogs understand feedback, timing, and expectations.

Management & Arousal Regulation
Reducing rehearsal of unwanted behaviour and emotional overload.

Handling & Leash Mechanics
Ensuring owners can guide behaviour without creating conflict or confusion.

These skills form the baseline for all further training.

  • Training Foundations is suitable for:

    • puppies and adolescent dogs

    • adult dogs with little or no formal training

    • dogs displaying reactivity, fear, or over-arousal

    • owners who want clear structure and realistic expectations

Regardless of the issue, training starts by building the systems required for learning.

  • Once Training Foundations is complete, progress is reviewed and the most appropriate next step is chosen.

    This may include:

    • continued obedience and skill development

    • further one-on-one support where required

    • behaviour-specific work for dogs needing additional guidance

Progression is based on readiness and not assumptions or pressure.

  • Training Foundations is delivered as a structured program rather than individual sessions.

    This approach:

    • supports consistency and repetition

    • improves learning outcomes

    • reduces frustration for dogs and owners

    • ensures training decisions are made ethically

The goal is long-term capability, not short-term fixes.
